Is Google making us into electric sheeple?

Google

Hi Kitat Arava!

Happy to have rejoined your class. In these troubling days of news, thought I would change it up a bit and share with you a different type of article that I read on the Times of Israel. What do you think? Is Google turning us all into the same type of thinkers or is it making us better?

  1. I think that as our society develops into the information age, our understanding of knowledge and wisdom has to develop as well. Thirty years ago you could call someone "smart" if they could tell you when the 30 Years War was (or even what it was), but today anyone with an internet connection can answer that and other rudimentary questions. With the sum of human inquiry at our fingertips, it doesn't matter what we know anymore, but how we use it. I think that the reason we often consider ourselves "electric sheeple," as the article calls it, is because we haven't fully grown into this new understanding of knowledge. We still consider the height of knowledge to be "knowing stuff," which is why I think Sela found that search engines are causing us to lose our individual flare for research.
At this point, though, there is so much data out there that knowledge has become the ability to sift through it, rather than to comprehend it.
