Ammunition hill Tyul

Six day war

The six day war, a war that had showed the Middle East that we are not a force to be reckoned with. This war started because of Eygpt violating the agreements after the Sinai campaign. Anouther reason was Syria trying to divert water ways in the Golan. As a result of this war we tripled the size of Israel and showed the true strength of the Jewish people. We begin our day at Ammunition Hill. A key point in the battle for Jerusalem. Here we watched an amazing presentation of the battle of Jerusalem on a 3 dimensional model of Jerusalem. The model had projections of light to show borders and who owned what territories. After this we left for the trenches. It was Kitat Arava driving out Jordanian forces as Max protected us from above (later he was shot by enemy fire). Exiting the trenches, we went to the indoor museum Where we first paid our respects to all branches of IDF that helped us take Jerusalem from Jordan. After we saw the beautiful song ירושלים של זהב Which talked about how Jerusalem was split; but after the war she added a verse which talked about us rejoicing in the old city. After we go to see a picture of soldiers getting emotional after being able to freely come to the Kotel. We learned about how Yitzchak Rabin was proud of his soldiers for showing such emotion. He thought it was nice that we can show we have a hard shell but a soft inside. We ended the tour of Ammunition Hill with the golden memorial displaying names of people who died at the battle. I later decided to look up one of the people by the name קרוק אלדד who was a soldier who died young at the age of 22 at Givat Hamivtar. For part of the response I would like to know if you researched anybody and if you found out anything interesting about them.
Next we went to Hebrew University which at the time was an Israel controlled land. The land was not connected to the rest of the Israel forces and Israel saw this place as a needed strategic place and in order to siege Jerusalem. When we connected the land it was a great victory. We later learn about the modern Hebrew University and about their amazing auditorium (where Arielle graduated). Overall, great day and I loved learning more about how we did so well at this time.

Why do you think it's important to Israel that it is recognized by the Arab league?
Do you think Moshe Dayan made a smart move by inviting Menachem Begen into the government? Why or why not?

  1. I think it is important for Israel to be recognized by the Arab league, because I think that there is no hope for peace without recognition. I know that there will never be a guarantee of peace among Israel and her surrounding neighbors for long periods of time, but if recognition is achieved, maybe there will be a chance. I think that Moshe Dayan was smart to invite Menachem Begen to the government. He understood that the only way Israel will be able to pull through victoriously is to be united. By inviting Begen into the plans, Dayan ensured that Begen would not feel left out and risk disunion among the various idealistic groups within Israel.

  2. Just like Rachel I believe the recognition of Israel by the Arab league is highly important. By accepting that it is a Jewish state it shows that we are working towards unity. If there was no recognition it would prolong the possibility of peace between Jewish Israelis and Arab Israelis. By inviting Menachem into the government, Dayan showed that there should not be a lack of equality between different groups of Idealistics in the state of Israel.

  3. As Rachael and Marina said, how can we expect peace when the Arab league refuses to legitimise our existence? The first step towards peace is to recognise that Israel is a country. I think is was noble of Moshe Dayan to invite Menachem Begen to the government, because it shows the finally understood necessity of peace within Israel. If we cannot even unite ourselves, how were we expecting to defeat surrounding countries? We were a new a small country as it was, so any lack of unity within Israel would have lead to her downfall.

  4. It is important that Israel is recognized by the Arab league because they are often the instigators of conflict between Israelis and Arabs. If they recognize us as a state then that means that they will most likely accept us as a state and stop trying to demolish us.I think that it was a very good idea for Dayan to invite Menachem into the government.Because we were such a new state, unity was crucial in fighting the war, and inviting Menachem into the government helped establish more unity.

  5. While by virtue recognition from Arab nations around us is important for international peace, the main problems facing Israel today are internal. In practice threats from other nations are minimal because Israel has United States backing, and will continue to have that as long as evangelical Christianity and old Jews in Florida and California exist. The huge issues today are how we carry ourselves in the face of a divided society. International recognition is not so important when the warfare is taking place within our borders.
I tried researching Shachar Yaakov Mordechai on google, but there were no results. It may be that nothing was written in English, but I think it may also be that soldiers do not get the respect they deserve, only their names on a monument. The way we treat our veterans and fallen soldiers, both in the United States and elsewhere, is horrible.

  6. It was necessary for the Arab league to recognize Israel as a state to begin the long long road to coexistence, which we still have not reached today. As for Moshe Dayan inviting Menachem Begen into the government, I think it was a smart move. It shows that Jews, no matter who they are and what they believe in, can work towards the same goals and the same idea of peace.

  7. I think that it's important for Israel to be recognized by the Arab league in order to finally at some point reach a peaceful way of living among each other. It's not that it'd necessarily be violent without this but it'd be a lot harder to live and I think in order for Arabs and Jews to coexist then mutual recognition and peace is something we need in the future. Not that it'd be nice to have, we need to have it.

  8. At the time of the Six Day War and the period directly afterward, recognition from the Arab League was immensely important. As Israel was still a relatively new country, it still needed to establish it's place as a budding world power. The Arab League's refusal to recognize Israel as a state did not exactly lend credence to it's right to exist, which it already had to struggle to gain from the UN and other world powers. Just as the world had to be united in accepting Israel, Israel had to be united internally if it were to succeed in the coming struggles. Thus Dayan's move to invite Begin into the government was a stroke of genius. If two political leaders with opposing views could work together, then so could a people fighting for their right to exist.

  9. Theoretically is the was a Palestinian state, they would want recognition from Israel (hopefully Israel will still be there), and it seems like they could be closer to having a state if they did respect and recognize Israel. The situation is complicated and messy, and I think I am not educated enough from an arab point of view to really say more. But I think putting in a minister of defense was good, since a prime minister needed to do many things during a time of war, and we were successful.

  10. I believe that it is extremely important to have recognition from the Arab League. Being recognized does not make peace between countries, but it is a symbol that the Arab League countries are at least showing the possibilities of negotiation and peace for the future. If I were alive back then, I would believe it was a good move to bring Menachem Begin into the government. It promotes negotiation and understanding to people with different political views. It was good step for uniting the Israeli government.

  11. I think that one of the steps leading to peace with the Arabs was Israel being recognized. If Israel was recognized and accepted, it meant that the Arabs were willing to negotiate peace terms. I also think that it was a good decision for Moshe Dayan to invite Menachem Begin into the government because it showed that even though they had opposing views, they were willing to work together to make peace.

  12. Being recognized was one of the key dreams of Ben Gurion, but the fact that we had to lose people to get that result is a bittersweet victory, even if it is an unavoidable one. It was a good idea in my opinion, but I know what happened after the fact so I'm biased. It is always good to have the ability to hear the other side of the argument, but when that argument shrouds you from completing your goals, that's when you have to get rid of that person.

  13. It was important that Israel was recognized by surrounding countries so that the State could enjoy some semblance of normality, and live without the constant fear of invasion. Although this threat did not completely go away with recognition, it was definitely a step forward.
I believe Menachem Begin's involvement during the Six Day War was incredibly beneficial for Moshe Dayan. By including the leader of the opposition in his government, Dayan ensured the full support of all Begin's followers. It was vital that the country was unified during this time, and a government that also represented the opposition was key to this unification.

  14. Making sure Israel is recognized by the Arab League is extremely important. If Israel were not to be recognized, it would be like how many people do not recognize other animals to have souls which is why it is so easy for them to go ahead and kill them. Israel needed to be recognized or it would constantly be under threat.
I believe it was a good move to bring Begin into the situation, it united the idealistic views of Israel and made Israel stronger as a whole.

  15. I think it was important that Israel be recognized by its neighboring countries so that we can feel at peace and not have to worry about attacks every hour of every day. I believe that it was a good idea to invite Menachem Begen into the government because he benefited Moshe Dayans plans. By inviting Menachem into the government Dayan was ensuring the support from the opposition.
