Chapter eleven: In which the guys give a babe a ride and try to make conversation

This chapter was both entertaining and full of morals and lessons. In the short two page story, two male friends Mordy and Uzi are heading down the road and notice a hitchhiker with her thumb out and they decide to stop and offer her a ride, only after passing her and having to back up. What happens once the girl named Lihi gets in the car is a very accurate representation of what the state of Israel stands for and its hospitality as well as its welcoming ways.
The reason I chose this story was because it was only once Uzi and Mordy passed Lihi that they turned around to pick her up. I think that this is an important metaphor or example for opportunities that we have in our lives. Sometimes we are presented with chances that can be meaningful and even life changing, but it may only be after these chances pass us that we realize how important they are to us. I would defiantly reccomend this short story along with the others in Keret's book The Bus Driver Who Wanted To Be Good because they have such legitimate morals and the stories are so enjoyable.
Because so much of Israeli society today is related to co existence and acceptance, I think this story displays what the contemporary society of Israel conveys. Because Uzi and Mordy did not know the girl they were picking up at all it just goes to show how friendly they were and I believe that that is a great representation of how welcoming Israel is.

  1. I really like that the story explores the idea of missed chances, and how that's an obvious theme. Whether it's commentary on Israeli politics or not, it's nice to uncover such a theme from a story like this. While the story could symbolize how welcoming Israel is, it could also symbolize how different Israel's fate would be had we made any different choices in the past, big or small.

  2. This story is also a good example of the value to allow strangers seeking shelter into your house. The men saw that the woman needed a ride, so after some reluctance, they decided to open up their vehicle to her and offer her transporation. It shows the reluctance but also the willingness of the previous Israeli society to open up their country to the aliyot from all over the world.
